Quick verdict: The Iberia Madrid stopover is one of the best free stopover programmes in Europe. The stop itself costs nothing extra, and you can stay up to nine nights. The main catches: you must select the Stopover fare when you book, you can only use it on one leg, and the route must connect through Madrid on an international itinerary.

What Is the Iberia Madrid Stopover?

The Iberia Madrid stopover, also called Stopover Hola Madrid, is Iberia’s programme that lets you break your long-haul journey in Madrid without paying more for your ticket. You can stay for up to ten days and nine nights and take advantage of discounts on hotels, public transport, museums, restaurants, shopping, and local experiences.

The idea is simple: instead of rushing through Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport, you add a stopover and explore the Spanish capital before continuing to your final destination. It works on both one-way and round-trip tickets, but only on one leg of the journey.

Who Can Book the Iberia Madrid Stopover?

To book an Iberia Madrid stopover, your ticket must include two flights with a connection in Madrid, and your origin or destination must be international. The only exception is a domestic-only Spanish itinerary, such as Barcelona–Madrid–Seville, which is not eligible.

You can use the stopover on most Iberia routes. If the stopover fare does not appear for your chosen route, it usually means the itinerary does not meet the programme’s requirements. Check the flight using the Multiple journeys section of Iberia’s search engine.

How Long Can You Stay in Madrid?

The Iberia Madrid stopover length is flexible:

  • Minimum stay: 24 hours from your arrival in Madrid.
  • Maximum stay: 10 days and 9 nights from your arrival in Madrid.

How to Book an Iberia Madrid Stopover

You must select the Stopover fare when you book your ticket. Iberia says it cannot be added to an existing booking after purchase. The easiest way to find eligible flights is through the dedicated Stopover Hola Madrid search page or by using the Multiple journeys option in Iberia’s regular flight search. You can also book through the Iberia Call Centre.

Booking steps:

  • Search for a route that connects through Madrid.
  • Select the Stopover option and choose how many nights you want to stay.
  • Pick your flights and complete the booking.
  • Access partner discounts and experiences through the Stopover Hola Madrid portal.

Which Airlines Can Operate the Flights?

You do not have to fly Iberia on every segment, but the operating airline depends on the flight length:

  • Flights over 6 hours: must be operated by Iberia, except to or from Mexico, the United States, or Puerto Rico, where American Airlines or British Airways are also permitted.
  • Flights under 6 hours: can be operated by Iberia, Iberia Express, Vueling, Air Nostrum, British Airways, or Aer Lingus.

What Perks and Discounts Are Included?

The main benefit of the Iberia Madrid stopover is the free break in Madrid. On top of that, Iberia offers special rates and discounts through partner companies, from a free two-day transport card to hotel deals and museum discounts. Benefits include:

  • Hotels: special rates and discounts in central locations.
  • Public transport: a free two-day tourist transport card.
  • Museums and monuments: reduced admission prices.
  • Excursions and experiences: special prices on tours.
  • Restaurants and musicals: exclusive discounts.
  • Shopping: special prices at selected fashion stores.
  • Internet: a discounted HolaFly eSIM rate.
  • Car hire, flights, and buses: big discounts if you travel further afield.

Some partner services must be booked in advance; each experience page shows whether advance booking is required.

How to Collect the Welcome Pack

The Welcome Pack includes a free two-day public transport card and other discount vouchers. You can also email stopoverholamadrid@iberia.es with questions about the programme.
